And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12v1) As the clock struck midnight on 31st December 2019, I took a deep breath. 2019 had not been an easy year and I felt as if it was time to move forward, a New Year. But the start to 2020 wasn’t easy and now we are in the middle of a global pandemic.   Certainly the race marked out for us all at present requires perseverance. We are all struck by the many trials this year and many worries: job security, health worries, challenges of home schooling and having to stay at home most of the time, some of us alone. Jesus and the strong man (Nico Marais)

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[a] how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed. Mark 5:18-20 What precedes today’s passage is the well-known story of Jesus sending the demons from this man into a herd (or litter, depending on who you ask) of pigs that ultimately drown themselves.  The Bible says this man was so strong that chains could not hold him.  When he is set free from his demonic bondage he begs Jesus to come with Him.  Jesus says no and sends him back to his family, friends and his own people to share what Jesus has done for him. God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil? Numbers 23:19 (NIV) Someone has worked out that the Bible includes the phrase “Fear not” or “Do not be afraid” 365 times, a reminder for each and every day of the year of the importance of hearing this message. We can receive it in two ways. The first is as a command - don’t allow your thinking and actions to be governed by fear. But the second is as a promise - you don’t need to be afraid because … So often the Bible encourages us not to fear because of what God will do or because of what He’s like. God always keeps His promises. If He didn’t, it would undermine the whole of His character. Just one failed promise would leave us not knowing when we could or couldn’t trust Him.
