Digging for Treasure (Tom Rutter)

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Matthew 13:44 God's kingdom is pictured here as something to be searched for, to wait for, to dig for - this is a journey of discovery. I pray that for us all, as we 'dig' turning over life's soil, that we may find the wonders God has hidden for us under the ground that our feet will walk across today. Prayer - Lord we ask that your kingdom will come among us, let your presence in our hearts transform everything in us. Your kingdom is a treasure as precious as the finest of pearls, may this treasure be our greatest and most important possession. Guide us as we walk your path and help us sign post your ways to those around us. Amen Tom Rutter

Jesus and the strong man (Nico Marais)

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[a] how much Jesus had done for him. This is exactly what Jesus asks each of us to do as well.  We can’t really share Christ’s peace, mercy, hope, power and love via proxy.  We have to...

Oily heads (James Clee)

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. (Psalm 23:5) I love a good roast. But when it comes to washing up the roasting tray the oil doesn’t come off easily. I frequently find my wife rewashing my pitiful attempts.  In this verse the host anoints the guest with oil - a sign of hospitality and honour. I take comfort in the fact that this oil doesn’t wipe off either! No matter what, because of Jesus, God will always welcome, honour and anoint us as guests at His table. Lord, thank you that you anoint us with oil that cannot be wiped off. What an honour to sit and be welcomed to your table. Amen
