Are you even my friend? (Penny Cox)

I find it very difficult to get over things that I have done that were wrong, or that have upset people. I often play the scenes back in my imagination and inwardly cringe (sometimes outwardly too!) at the things that I did.
So, I can’t imagine how Peter must have felt when he denied knowing Jesus, not just once, but three times! Especially as he had promised Jesus that he would never do this. But how did Jesus respond? Anger? Hurt? No. Amazingly, and wonderfully, he gave Peter the chance to undo his wrongdoing by affirming his love for Jesus three times. The third time that Jesus asks Peter if he loves him, he uses the word translated into Greek, phileo, meaning affection and friendship. Jesus wants us to be his friends. 
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you that you know what we need before we even ask you. Thank you that we can come to you with all our physical and spiritual needs.  Amen.

Psalm 42:1-2 (NIVUK) Many of us will find this time of social distancing very difficult. I'm looking at you, extroverts... Even though we can use technology to communicate and stay in touch, there's still a sense of loss by not being together in the same room. And this is exactly what the Sons of Korah feel as they express their longing for God. It is also interesting to note how they respond to this sense of loss: they burst out in praise. "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God." The great comfort we can take from this psalm is that, because of Christ's sacrifice on the cross and His victory over death, there is nothing that can isolate us from our loving Father in heaven. “I will exalt you. My God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever” (Psalm 145) The conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer brings great peace. Having earnestly brought forward our requests, we now reaffirm that our Heavenly Father is all powerful and in control of all things. When saying these final words, in my mind I picture handing over and entrusting all my worries and burdens to our Almighty God. As we place our petitions into his holy hands and surrender ourselves to his kingdom, let’s experience the peace we reach by letting God work. Our “Amen” joins us together, wherever we are and whatever our situation, in the harmony of agreement. If you have time today or over the weekend, perhaps you could read the whole of Psalm 145. It is a wonderful psalm of praise . A Prayer - Heavenly Father. Thank you that through your son Jesus Christ you taught us to pray.
